Course Description
This course is designed to provide the learner with the theoretical and practical skills
required for phlebotomy, which is probably the most common invasive procedure in
health care settings. The process of collection of blood samples directly affects the
quality of these specimens and hence is of utmost importance for the quality of the
laboratory results and, ultimately, the quality of treatment that is delivered to the
patient. The health and safety of patients and phlebotomists is also a topic of great
importance, which is also addressed since the latter carry out dangerous practices,
which render them prone to incidents such as needle-stick injuries, and both groups
are also susceptible to transmission of disease.
